We are blessed to live in an area that offers quality year-round fishing. As such, each season brings new and exciting opportunities to the table! There is truly something for everyone of every experience level, so walk through a year in the life of Ozark Waters Fly Fishing below to find what best suits you!
The start of the new year brings with it opportunities to catch big fish. Typically suited for the serious angler, mid-to-late January kicks off our annual streamer season targeting hungry brown trout on 4-8" streamers.
February offers double the chances to get into larger-than-life White River trout. Many consider February to be our peak streamer fishing season and it is hard to argue against it. However, February brings our famed "shad kill," offering chances at trophy browns and rainbows under indicator or on top water. Hint: You need to inquire about this!
March offers milder temperatures for the less-inclined, but with incredible opportunities for streamer action. Even more so, mid-to-late March begins our transition into smallmouth bass season and the ever-popular caddis hatch. This is yet another great month for anglers of all skill levels to have a fun day on the river.
April becomes an embarrassment of riches, as both peak smallmouth bass season begins as well as our caddis hatch on the White River. The caddis hatch is our busiest season, so look to book well in advance. Typically, this hatch is the most consistent way for anglers of all experience levels to target trophies on our trout waters.
May continues our famed caddis hatch. The weather is immaculate with cool mornings, warm afternoons, and the occasional rain shower. Early May is also Ozark Waters Fly Fishing's favorite time to chase smallies on the fly.
Ah, June. Sulfur mayflies hatch in droves this time of year. Arguably the best dry fly fishing on the White River is in June. Long casts, tiny flies, and big browns. Experienced anglers can have a field day, but June offers opportunity for all skill levels to have a fun day on the water.
July means late-season mayfly action, the unofficial kickoff to our "hopper" season, and nymphing for fish of all sizes. When the weather is hot, there is no better place to be than on the cool waters of the White River.
August is historically our peak "hopper" season. Throwing big foam bugs in big summer water for big brown trout is about as fun as it can get.
The changing of the seasons is welcomed after a fun and busy summer. Temperatures start to dip come late September and water flow mellows out a bit. Brown trout are still eagerly looking up for beetles and grasshoppers and trout are as happy as can be.
October may be the most popular month of the year for beginners and families to come try their hand at fly fishing for trout in the Ozarks. Many schools in the South go on "fall break," leaving ample opportunity for kids and parents to enjoy a quick getaway. Fish are aplenty and the fall colors are gorgeous come late October.
November is peaceful. Crowds have dissipated, school is back in session, and the river's personality seems to change. Days are pleasant on the river. If you like solitude, November and December are your months.
The year's end is a wonderful time to try your hand at fly fishing. The days are quiet and filled with consistently-bent rods. We cannot think of a better early Christmas gift than a day on the water.
